Prayer - A Metaphor for Change
Spring is a metaphor for change. Some changes we eagerly await, and some we abhor. Some
changes we plan and others arrive uninvited. To all these changes we ask the gift of Your
perspective beckoning us to expectation, hope, and rebirth.
May the sunlight and the rain be reminders that You are at work renewing the earth. As a God
of renewal, You are ever at work in our lives, too.
Open our eyes and lives to the needed changes in our lives this Spring. Awaken us to new life
and perspective, for we pray in Jesus’ name.

The first day of Spring brings a sense of expectation, hope and renewal. We welcome the warmer weather and increasing hours of daylight, feeling optimistic about changes needed to make the most of every day.
As well as being the first day of spring, the first day of September marks the start of the Season of Creation. The Season of Creation is the annual Christian celebration of prayer and action to care for our common home. We are part of all that God has made and our wellbeing is interwoven with the wellbeing of the Earth. Together, the ecumenical family around the world unites to pray and respond to the cry of Creation.
Spotlight on Humanities and Health & PE
We continue to enjoy the season of special weeks across the school. Last week the focus was on Humanities with Year 7 Ancient Day and a range of lunchtime activities to highlight the importance of understanding human behaviour, interactions and processes that have shaped our world. Next week, the spotlight will be on the promotion of Health and Physical Education to enhance and appreciate healthy, active living.
The celebration of different disciplines brings the community together to share the fun and pique interest in learning inside and outside of the classroom.
Thank you to all the staff and students who have been involved in planning, running and participating in activities.
Father’s Day
We wish all the dads and father figures in our school community a very happy Father’s Day for Sunday. We remember also the dads who are no longer with us. May all dads know that their unconditional love, support and all that they do for us are very much appreciated.
Year 9 Premier League
Congratulations to the Year 9 Boys’ Volleyball team who enjoyed semi-final success against Catholic Regional College Caroline Springs. We wish them all the best for the finals next week against Marymede Catholic College.
School Improvement Surveys
Each year the school invites feedback from students, staff and parents through the MACSSIS School Improvement surveys. These surveys are completed in Catholic primary and secondary schools across Melbourne. The data helps schools to identify what is going well, to measure the impact of new initiatives and to identify areas for further growth.
The surveys are completed online and are available in a number of languages. The MACSSIS survey period runs from Monday 28 August to Friday 15 September.
Parents/Carers will have received their survey link via email.
We encourage all families to contribute. For the data to be valid, we need as many families as possible to provide feedback. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Staff and students will be completing the surveys on Thursday 7th September.
Further information about the MACSSIS surveys is available by clicking these links:

Listen, Learn, Love.
This is the theme for the 2023 Australian Bishop Conference Social Justice Statement. In the statement the Bishops challenge us to a new engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. In 1967, Australians gave overwhelming support to a referendum that recognised Australia’s First Peoples as citizens. In 2023, we will be given a chance to vote in another referendum to constitutionally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples through a Voice to Parliament.
Australia’s Bishops see it as an opportunity for all Australians to renew our engagement with the First Peoples of Australia. They have come to this view through much listening to the First Peoples and they encourage us all to listen to them in the spirit of love and humility.
Year 10 Reflection Day
The Year 10’s will be heading to their Justice Day in the city on the 5th of September. The Year 10 Justice Day aims to give students experiences to develop a closer connection with those in need in our community. The day will involve students hearing stories from organisations supporting the homeless and completing a Justice Reflection Walk in the city centre. The day will conclude with a small group reflection and year level Liturgy at the Tracey Centre in Parkville.
The students will travel by public transport and tickets for the train and tram will be supplied by the school. Students will be expected to arrive at school by 8:30am. They will walk to the St Albans train station with their teachers in class groups and they will return to school by bus at 3:10pm. The students will be supervised at all times throughout the day.
Students must wear their sports uniform and they will need to bring their own lunch and drink with them as there will be no opportunity to buy food.
Humanities Week
Ancient Day

'Ancient day was a day full of various activities that educated us about life in ancient Rome. We participated in activities such as sports & status, gladiators, warriors & warfare, rulers & subjects and lastly, archery. I enjoyed every session but my favourite out of all of the activities was archery. This is because everybody got the chance to participate and we were able to learn as well as be active. What I learnt from ancient day is the history of ancient Rome, their social classes and how they lived their daily lives.' - Abrielle Fernando 7 Avoca
'Ancient day was a pretty fun day, we got to do archery, learn new things about Ancient Rome and see the armour and weaponary they used. At the start of the day we did activities involving Gladiators fighting in the Colosseum. In the middle of the day we got to pretend that we were tribes fighting for land. At the end of the day we did a learning activity and archery. In my personal opinion, it was a pretty good day to take a little fun break from work.' - Isaac Hurmez, 7 Avoca

Nightmare on Theodore St
It was such an honour to present this year’s production of ‘Nightmare on Theodore Street’. My love of Comedy and Horror combined to create an entertaining musical with twists and messages for us all. It has been an overwhelmingly emotional journey, working with so many incredible young human beings, and seeing something that I wrote and created; come to life in such a special way. Not only have I had the pleasure of developing actors, dancers and singers, I also worked with many phenomenal young musicians in the band. Rehearsals have been running since the start of term 2 and every week, we saw the show grow and grow. A school production happens because of many people. I am so grateful to have such and amazing Arts team and support staff that have worked tirelessly to put together the show and support our amazing students.
Both our evening shows were SOLD OUT in two weeks. The money raised from the ticket sales will be donated to the Holy Eucharist Food Bank. We raised a total of $2500.
A huge thank you to all the students and staff for your hard work. I am so blessed to have been on this journey with you all. Thanks to everyone in our school community who supported the show or came to see it.
Clarence Marshall, Arts Leader
Here are a few responses from members of the cast and band.
Working on the production was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had here at CRC St Albans. I actually wanted to be a part of the backstage crew; something I always wanted to do. Then at the start of term 3, Mr Marshall approached me and asked if I wanted to do the lighting instead. I was hesitant about doing so, but I said, “Why not? What's the worst that could happen”? So, after I got the role, I joined everyone at rehearsals and got used to the structure of the show. The whole experience allowed me to get closer to new people, and I was able to help out the cast, crew and band. It was the most fun I’ve ever had in a long time. Seeing everyone trying their best at rehearsals was the best sight to see, because I knew it was going to be a great show. During production week, it was more fun than ever, seeing everyone being so nervous and excited got me nervous and anxious as well. But in the end, I brought my best to the few shows we did, and it was so much fun. Everything about the production week was incredible, I would never trade that experience and feeling for anything. Corey Dang, Yr 9
I'm so fortunate to have been a part of the production because of how fun it was. I was surrounded by many amazing and talented people that I would never expect to talk to. The whole band, ensemble and cast are the coolest people I know and I'm so happy for everyone who gave their best in this show. Rehearsals and the days of performances were always the most fun thing and I looked forward to it every week. My time during the school production of Nightmare on Theodore Street, will be one of my main highlights that I’ll never forget. Dru Celestial, Yr 9
My time as the student director of ‘Nightmare on Theodore Street’ was probably the most enjoyable experience I’ve ever had. Being a director included, adding my ideas into certain parts of the play, which gave me the opportunity to show myself in other ways and not only through my acting. This allowed me to create something I’d truly be proud of. Helping Miss Baldacchino and Mr Marshall create this, is probably one of my greatest achievements and I will remember the fun I had with the cast and team members for as long as I live :) Angelina Brillouet, Yr 9
Acting on stage was the best highlight of my time here at school. It was such a surreal experience to be on stage feeling like a real actor - putting on microphones, as well as singing and dancing on a stage filled with props was beyond awesome. The best part about being in ‘Nightmare on Theodore Street’ was the new friendships that we all established, it was like one big family that gathered every week. I was so excited to sing songs with band members, and rehearse lines with other actors because we always had a good laugh as we would immerse ourselves in our characters. It was definitely a great experience to showcase our talents and express a different version of ourselves through our characters. It felt so special and rewarding to see smiles in the crowd when we were performing and that is what truly kept us going, knowing that we made people feel happy in the moment. Janelle Lawang, Yr 10
The school musical was an incredible experience. Seeing everyone bond and work together with all of our different strengths was a very fun time. For the last 3 months, having rehearsals every week was something that I always looked forward to and is something that I will cherish forever. The musical helped me make many new friends from all year levels. The show was a well written story, and each unique song in the show had its own special aspect. We all worked so hard to bring the story to life and I am so proud of everyone. Thank you to Mr Marshall, Miss Baldacchino, Ms Cioccia, Miss Pauline and Jen Cummerford for their hard work. Teresa Marsom, Yr 8
Wellbeing for Learning
Self-care September
Do you show yourself the same kindness as others? Many of us find this hard. Yet when we treat ourselves as deserving of love, everything goes better. For us and those around us too.
Mindful Moment: Try this now self-love meditation to cultivate compassion and inner peace.
True happiness comes from caring for ourselves AND caring for others. See our Self-care September calendar with lots of suggestions for little acts that make a big difference. And being kind also brings us a greater sense of fulfilment too.
Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. So, let's make time to care for ourselves this month so we can then show up more for others too.
