Learning Matters
CRC Learner
Knowing how to learn is essential for effective learning
In learning and teaching, we are focusing on strengthening the skills of metacognition. Put simply, metacognition is described as ‘thinking about one’s thinking’. Through metacognitive strategies, students increase both their awareness of the learning process and the level of control over their learning.
There are three phases of the metacognitive process: planning, monitoring and evaluating.
Research shows that most growth of metacognitive ability happens between ages 12 and 15. As students become better at using metacognitive strategies, they gain confidence and become more independent as learners.

NAPLAN 2022
Year 7 and Year 9 Students
All students in Year 7 and Year 9 will take part in the NAPLAN testing from Tuesday 10th May to Friday 20th May. During this time all students will complete 3 tests in Literacy (Reading, Writing and Conventions of Language) and 1 test in Numeracy. Please see the NAPLAN schedule attached to see when your class will be completing each of the tests.
As it is not possible to study for a NAPLAN test, students are strongly encouraged to prepare themselves as best as they can by:
- having at least 8 - 10 hours of sleep the night before a test
- avoiding the use of electronic devices (screen time) one hour before going to sleep
- having a healthy breakfast and snacks during the testing period
- drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day of a test
- ensuring their laptops are fully functional and charged prior to a test
- arriving to class on time, settled and ready to do their best in each of the tests
Currently the students in Years 7 and 9 have been provided with the opportunity to complete a Practice Test so that they can familiarise themselves with the Online National Assessment Platform.
Students may also wish to familiarise themselves with the online test tools via the use of the ACARA NAPLAN Online public demonstration site.
Please note any student absent on the day of a NAPLAN test will need to provide a doctor’s certificate and arrangements will be made for the student to complete the test at another time determined by the NAPLAN Coordinator.
If any students have any issues with their laptop during this week, please see Simon so he can assist you with this.
For more information about NAPLAN Online, families are encouraged to visit nap.edu.au. Students that are concerned about NAPLAN or have any questions, are encouraged to talk with their PC teacher, Year level leader, Maths or English teachers.
We wish all our Year 7 and Year 9 students all the very best for their upcoming NAPLAN tests.

Wellbeing for Learning
Positive School-Wide Behaviour in the Classroom
We ask that each class and student to revisit and discuss each statement as a kind reminder of how we behave in all classrooms at CRC St Albans.
This will ensure we are creating a safe and orderly environment for teaching and learning to occur.
Character Strength of the Week
Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence - Virtue of Transcendence
Definition: The human tendency to feel powerful transcendent emotions when noticing beauty in the world.
Explanation: Feels awe and wonder in beauty, inspired by goodness of others.
Synonyms: Alluring, exquisite, fascinating, graceful.
Quote: "Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it" - Confucius
"Thank God I have seen an orange sky with purple clouds. How easy it is to forget that we have the privilege of living in God's art gallery." -ERICA GOROS
How to ignite Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence (ABE):
- How does affect your work, relationships, use of leisure time, and community involvement?
- How have you nurtured your ABE?
Meaningful May
Our new Meaningful May calendar is full of actions to help you feel part of something bigger, so please share it and help spread the word.
This month please be kind to yourself and remember you do not need to have everything figured out to find meaning in life. There are lots of actions that help us live with purpose, even in difficult or uncertain times.
Super Sleep Spaces
Consistent Predictable Routines are important in all aspects of life, including school routines, home routines, but one of the most important is ‘sleep routine’. Please see the ‘Super Sleep Spaces’ document below, which will help our school community (students and families) improve their sleep patterns and overall wellbeing.
