LEARNING MATTERS
YEAR 8 DRAMA
Year 8 Drama students were asked to write modern-day script for a Romeo & Juliet scene. They reimagined it in a modern-day setting and context and used common-day language to convey pain & conflict.
Nurse opens the door to Juliet’s bedroom and walks up to the window to open curtains.
NURSE:
Wake the &$#@ up Juliet! Hurry up before Daniel Andrews says to postpone your wedding, my guy!
Nurse didn’t hear any response so she slowly approached Juliet in concern.
NURSE:
Juliet?
It is silent for a moment.
NURSE:
"Mate come on! Dude, you have to get ready in 4 hours, now is not the time to be fake sleeping!"
Nurse realises something is wrong. Nurse pulls blanket away from Juliet and is shooookkk.
NURSE:
"Uhhh, guys… come here, fetch me some water to throw at this dog."
Nurse tries to shake Juliet awake, but Juliet doesn't move.
Friar Laurence and family members rushes into Juliet's room and shock is written on their faces.
FRIAR LAURENCE:
"Ayo, is she not waking up?"
NURSE:
"She’s probably playing dead fish mate."
Nurse pokes Juliet, minutes later Juliet is confirmed to be dead.
FRIAR LAURENCE:
I hate to break it to you but miss girl is kinda dead, I ain’t God man, I can’t do anything about this. Just don’t think too much about Juliet’s death, and you’ll be fine, it is what it is.
Family members start to cry and mourn for Juliet’s death.
"Oh well, Nurse, arrange Juliet’s deathbed and burial immediately. I’mma head out. Byeeee".
NURSE:
"Damn, what a waste of money."
Family members follow after Friar Laurence, leaving Juliet’s room. Nurse looks around her surroundings and slowly tries on Juliet’s wedding dress.
NURSE:
"Too bad, this doesn’t fit me. I bet you I could’ve slayed in this outfit, gurllll."
THE END

(In this story, Ivan is representing Romeo and Stephen is representing Balthasar)
The night is growing more and more tense as the time flys by. Ivan can feel the air become heavier with every breath he takes, and his anxiety is fuelled beneath his skin. 12:08AM. Two hours past the time when Asriel was meant to escape from her nearby flat and rendezvous with Ivan by the fountain. Ivan continues to check his time on his phone, and begins to pace around the fountain. After taking a few glances up at the people walking around, he takes out his phone one last time.
IVAN: "Stephen, hey are you there? Anxious and stumbling over his words."
STEPHEN: "Yeah man how’s the date going, (ugh), I assume you called me past 12 for a reason considering both you and I might as well be fired if we don’t."
Interrupted, Ivan begins to plunge straight into his thoughts, distressed and fidgeting beside the fountain.
IVAN: "Stephen, listen! Asriel’s not shown up, and I’ve been waiting for two hours now. She hasn’t responded to any of my messages and (gulp), I… I think she might be… gone!"
Tears begin to shed from beneath his iris, eventually leaking down his face. Taking notice of the state that Ivan has found himself in, Stephen straightens himself from his bed and attempts to reassure him.
STEPHEN: "Ivan I think you need to relax, she’s probably just forgotten, or already been caught and taken home, I’m not sure what you would expect."
Interrupted once more, he refuses to take back the higher ground.
IVAN: "Stephen! She promised she would message me if anything bad had happened, and I’ve received nothing! No calls, no texts, I’ve checked my emails, and nothing! Something has to be wrong, and (sniff)... I’m not sure what to do…"
Aware of what he needs to do in order to comfort his best friend, Stephen exits from his bed and switches his phone to speakerphone.
STEPHEN: "Listen, listen, I’m closer to her place right? And let’s face it, her father would much rather see me at her doorstep rather than you after what had happened last Friday. How about I go over there and check? It can’t hurt to try right?"
Caught up in the moment, Ivan immediately agrees, and puts his head into his hands, on the edge of the fountain.
IVAN: "Yes! Great idea, you are my saving grace man, I just want to know for sure if she still loves me or if something has happened."
Stephen, now fully dressed in black attire…
STEPHEN: "Anything for you, Ivy, I’ll keep in touch once I get there, but you DO in fact owe me next time we visit Mayfair."
Relieved, Ivan responds to Stephen’s playful joke.
IVAN: "(Heh) I thought I told you not to call me that."
Stephen forcefully hangs up the call and slides his phone into his left pocket, taking the route to his car.

Kayla Narrator: "Romeo opens the door."
Romeo:“Oh, hello Tybalt. Can I help you?”
Tybalt: “Yes you can actually.. HOW DARE YOU MARRY MY COUSIN WITHOUT MY CONSENT!!” (While holding romeo’s neck)
Romeo: “Woah, woah, woah Tybalt. Calm down. You know how much I love Juliet. I can’t go a day without thinking about her.”
Tybalt: “HOW CAN YOU TELL ME TO CALM DOWN! When you're not even worthy of marrying my cousin!”
Narrator Ngun: "Tybalt pushes Romeo with anger as Mercutio runs out to see what is going on."
Mercutio: “Hey! What’s all this commotion?”
Romeo: “Tybalt is trying to stop me from marrying Juliet!”
Narrator Kayla: "Mercutio punches Tybalt and they begin to fight. Then Tybalt takes out his knife from his pocket and stabs Mercutio in the stomach. Mercutio dies tragically."
Narrator Ngun: “Tybalt quickly drops the knife.”
Tybalt: "I'm so.o.rr.yy, Ahhh.. GET AWAY FROM MEEEE!!!!!"
Romeo: "GET BACK HERE! YOU JUST STABBED MY BEST FRIEND!”
Narrator Kayla: "In a rush, Romeo chases after Tybalt with a knife, grabbing him by the neck as he stabs tybalt in the stomach causing blood to gush out."
Romeo: "Oh no what did I do?"

These include:
- Having a good study work space at home which is well lit with natural light and is comfortable for them.
- If they are using technology to study ensure that any form of social media is not in the background.
- The majority of learning happens inside the classroom; therefore, students are strongly encouraged to use this time as effectively as possible.
- Students are encouraged to have an open dialogue with their teachers about their learning and approaches to studying.
- Healthy habits that include a healthy diet, exercise and good sleep patterns are also important.
- Asking your child each night how they are going with exam preparation and opening conversations with them.
- Ask your child to share their study notes with you for each subject.
If you would like support with this, please contact your child's Homeroom Teacher or Year Level Leader.
We trust that students will be adequately prepared and wish them well with the exams.
We remind all our families that exams are a compulsory part of our school program at Year 9 and 10. If a student is sick on the day of an examination, parents are asked to please notify the school and provide a medical certificate. Once the student returns, they must reschedule the exam with Mr Dale Marshall.
