PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Image 2019
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Image 2019. Once again, it was a wonderful celebration of creativity and design thinking. Congratulations to all students who had their work from the Arts and Technology exhibited. We are in awe of your ingenuity, and the beauty, thought and skill in your work.
Thank you to the Arts and Technology teachers, and the student curators who spent many hours, both in and after school, bringing together the exhibition. Your vision, energy and hard work really helped to honour the work of the student artists and designers, and to ensure that all who attended had a lovely experience.
Inter-house Athletics Carnival
Unfortunately, hot, windy and dusty weather conditions forced an early finish to the Inter-house Athletics carnival on the 1st November.
In a shortened program, Corbett took the boys’ aggregate, Guelen were victorious in the girls, and took out the overall trophy. Detailed results, points for each house and individual age group medal winners are all noted later in the newsletter.
Congratulations and thank you to Guelen House and to all who competed in trying conditions. I would particularly like to thank students and staff for the way they worked together in managing the shortened program and early return to school. It is in difficult circumstances that our mettle (character, spirit and courage) is tested – everyone stepped up really well.
Williams Cup Update
Corbett House still holds the lead in the Williams Cup after recent House Week and the Athletics carnival but the cup is far from decided!
With a number of points still available through the Term 4 Readers’ Cup and the Ball Sports Day - can Reis come up the outside to pull off a historic first win, can Guelen make it four in a row or O’Reilly come from last for a classic win? Current standings in the 2019 Williams Cup are as follows:
Corbett: 96
O’Reilly: 72
Reis: 83
Guelen: 82
Year 8 Premier League
I would like to congratulate Year 8 students on a very good Premier League season. Students displayed great sportsmanship, fine team spirit and strong endeavour in all sports. Thank you to all the staff who coached a team, to Ms Jurcec and Mr Ly for their organisation of the events and all the students who represented our school so well.
Congratulations to the Year 8 Boys’ volleyball team who were undefeated throughout the home and away season, and will compete in the cross over finals this week. Best wishes to the team.
Report Preparation Day: Friday 29 November
Whilst assessment and finalisation of reports continue into the last week of term 4, Friday 29 November is set aside for staff to mark exams and to begin the preparation of reports. Year 10 students will have finished by the date and students in Years 7 - 9 will not be required at school.
Kids Teaching Kids Conference
Congratulations to the Year 7 and 8 students who were recently involved in the Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids conference at Melbourne University. The two-day conference is an opportunity for teams of students to teach, engage with and learn from other young people from other schools. Our representatives presented the art of making Mindful Mud Dumplings (Hikaru Dorodango) which is the Japanese art of making beautiful, delicate spheres from water and mud.
From all accounts, it was a very popular session, with both teachers and students from other schools very interested in this creative and mindful activity. I thank Mr Hayden O’Doherty and Ms Emma van Wees for their work in preparing and accompanying students.
Year 10 Music Drama Evening
Performing to authentic audiences beyond the classroom is an important part of the Arts curriculum. Last week family and friends gathered to watch the Year 10 Music Drama students present for their assessment pieces. It was a privilege to listen and watch as students presented vocal selections, played piano and guitar pieces and presented dramatic monologues. All should be very proud of what they have achieved. Thank you to Ms Baldacchino and Mr Marshall for their work with the students, and Mr Julien who was the guest assessor for the music.
Re-enrolment for 2020
A number of families still need to return the re-enrolment form for next year. These are now overdue. I ask that you do so as soon as possible, as we have a number of enrolment applications at each level to finalise.
Since our last newsletter
Over and above the day to day activities of the school since our last newsletter students, families and staff have participated in the following:
- PAT Testing
- Music Drama Night
- Year 7 Back to primary school visits
- Duke of Edinburgh camp
I am sure that students and their families are very appreciative of all these opportunities and the time and energy that staff put into organising and offering these experiences.
