Learning Matters

Science Week @ CRC

The school theme for National Science Week in 2025 is Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language. This theme invites students and teachers across Australia to delve into the mysteries of the Universe by exploring the fundamental languages of nature, including mathematics and the groundbreaking field of quantum science.

Many activities were held during classes and lunchtime to celebrate the wonders of science. These included Education Perfect Science Challenge, science experiments/competitions and lunchtime activities such as the Tritation Challenge.

Did you see the meteor light up Melbourne's night sky this week? A nice suprise for Science Week!

Cybersafety:

Your brain on technology

Did you know that every time you scroll, swipe, or tap on your device, your brain is working hard behind the scenes? While too much screen time can be unhelpful, technology can also give your brain some amazing workouts.

A note of caution: Overusing technology, especially late at night, can interfere with your sleep by keeping your brain active when it should be resting. Too much use can also lead to dependence or addiction, making it harder to focus on other activities you enjoy. Finding a healthy balance is the key to keeping your brain at its best.

Here are three positive ways technology can boost brain activity:

  1. Problem-Solving Power – Video games and coding challenges can strengthen your brain’s ability to think logically, make decisions quickly and find creative solutions.

  2. Memory Training – Educational apps and online learning tools can help improve your memory by storing and recalling information more effectively.

  3. Learning New Skills – Whether it’s learning a language through an app or exploring science through videos, technology can fire up new neural pathways, helping your brain grow and adapt.

Did you know? Your brain sends information between neurons at speeds of up to 430 kilometres per hour – faster than a Formula 1 car!

Book Week

From Saturday 16 to Saturday 23 August, we’ll be joining schools across Australia in celebrating Children’s Book Week, the CBCA’s biggest national event of the year. This year marks a special milestone — 80 years of Book Week — and the theme, Book an Adventure!, invites students to set sail through stories, explore fantastical worlds and embark on journeys through time and imagination.

Our feature artist for 2025, Jess McGeachin, has brought this adventurous spirit to life with a whimsical map filled with imaginary characters, inspiring readers to travel far and wide through the pages of a book.

Why 20 Minutes a Day Matters

Research shows that reading for just 20 minutes a day can significantly improve vocabulary, comprehension and overall academic success. It also sparks creativity, builds empathy and develops lifelong learning habits. This Book Week, we encourage families to set aside dedicated time each day to read together or to enjoy a quiet reading session.

Throughout the week, students will take part in short, fun homeroom activities in celebration of Book Week, helping us celebrate the joy of reading in playful and engaging ways.

Let’s inspire our students to “Book an Adventure!” this year,  both at school and at home.
